Group Therapy for Women with Endometriosis in Washington, DC Provides Support and Tools

What is endometriosis?

The Center for Endometriosis Care defines endometriosis as a “systemic, inflammatory disease characterized at surgery by the presence of endometrium-like tissue found outside the uterus, usually with an associated inflammatory process”. Endometriosis is much more than a bad period. Impacting 1 in 10 women, this disease can cause pelvic pain, infertility, painful sex, digestive issues, bladder pain, fatigue, chronic pain and more. It is imperative that women with endometriosis have a team of doctors, surgeons, physical therapists and mental health therapists to manage the systemic impact of this disease. At Women’s CBT, we want to be on your team in supporting your mental health with endometriosis.

How can group therapy for women with endometriosis in Washington DC help me?

Keep moving forward and reach your goals living with endometriosis.

We work with high achieving, hard working women who feel like their lives have been put on hold due to a diagnosis of endometriosis. It can feel so isolating navigating diagnosis, treatment and surgery alone. It can also feel like your life plans have been derailed or you may be comparing your path to others. A diagnosis of endometriosis does not mean you can no longer achieve your dreams or goals. At Women’s CBT, we believe in supporting you during this life change and creating accommodations to help you continue on your life path.

Learn helpful coping skills and tools to manage your mental health with endometriosis.

Psychoeducation of Nervous System

When we understand what medical trauma is, we can validate our experiences of medical trauma and find tools to move through it. In our group, you will learn about your nervous system, the fight/flight/freeze response, how to identify what response your body is having and create a toolbox of realistic tools to use when overstimulated, anxious or overwhelmed.

Somatic and Mindfulness Skills

Mindfulness is not just meditation and it is not one size fits all. In our group, you will learn various types of mediations but you will also gain mindfulness skills such as grounding exercises, deep breathing to stimulate your vagus nerve and somatic techniques such as butterfly tapping and self tapping. These all help regulate your nervous system and promote healing.

Trauma Informed Cognitive Behavior Therapy

Learn cognitive behavioral therapy tools that do not invalidate the medical trauma you have experienced. Learn how to create helpful thought reframes and move past stuck points or unhelpful thoughts. Become mindful of unhelpful thought patterns in order to notice unhelpful thoughts and provide opportunity to reframe intrusive thoughts.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Learn distress tolerance skills that help you manage your feelings of anxiety, depression and high pain days. Distress tolerance skills from Dialectical Behavioral Therapy as well as dialectical thinking strategies help hold both our emotional mind and our rational mind.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy tools help us expand our feelings of acceptance surrounding this new diagnosis. Acceptance of endometriosis does not mean you are giving up on treatments or that you are okay with having this disease. Acceptance simply allows us to be radically open to our reality and take committed actions to get us closer to where we hope to be.

Find your community of women with endometriosis who just get it in Washington, DC.

Receiving a diagnosis of endometriosis can often lead to feelings of isolation, loneliness, and discouragement. Building a support network of women who also have endometriosis can significantly transform how you approach this phase of your life. You won’t need to justify the difficulties you're facing—these women will inherently understand and empathize with your experience. Sharing stories, advice, and coping strategies can provide a sense of camaraderie and reassurance that you're not alone in this journey. Moreover, these connections can offer practical tips for managing symptoms, navigating medical treatments, and advocating for yourself in healthcare settings.

Remember, self-care is paramount. Engage in activities that bring you joy and relaxation, whether it’s through gentle exercise, meditation, creative hobbies, or simply spending time with loved ones. Educate yourself about the condition, as knowledge can empower you to make informed decisions about your health and well-being.

Above all, be kind to yourself and acknowledge the strength it takes to navigate this condition. Embrace the support around you, and know that while endometriosis is a part of your life, it does not define you.
